Banning the Swastika: cause célèbre for a dictatorship of the majority

German politicians (oh, the irony) have called for a Europe-wide ban of Nazi symbols, including the swastika. Hold on, isn’t the swastika a religious symbol that was misappropriated by the Nazis? Yes, it is, as it happens. And the religious people who see the swastika as a symbol of peace, fertility, and everything that is good in this Universe, aren’t happy.

But does fighting fire with fire really work? These politicians believe they can fight neo-Nazism by censuring it into oblivion. The Nazis were one of the many totalitarian regimes who used censure to oppress the people. I cannot help but think how naive and dangerous it is to try and fight totalitarian extremism by applying totalitarian methods.

Oh, the irony of it all.
